It usually takes years, decades or even a whole lifetime for people to know what kind of person they want to be and what kind of work they want to do. But things have changed because I became a research intern at CHEC three months ago.
Change in My Mind
When I came to CHEC, my knowledge of HCI is very limited. But CHEC invited many top-class professors to visit CHEC and gave inspiring presentations. They shared their research and life experience, which inspired me a lot. From their presentation, I realized that there is a possibility to do more things at HCI research rather than stay in the comfort zone. Of course, it is necessary to do traditional basic research, but it should not be limited to this. There are many interesting research topics including “Feminist + HCI”, “AI + HCI”, “Automated Drive + HCI” and so on. And those researchers are trying to enhance human mental capacity essentially. They try to find out the relationship between the human and computer essentially. All of this inspired me to reconsider what kind of work I want to do. I want to be a qualified HCI researcher and take it as a career for all my life.
Silver Linings behind Dark Clouds
At that time, I was confused because my ability couldn’t keep up with my ambitions and I didn’t know how to improve it. But again, I learned a lot from the CHEC Weekly Sharing Session, including methods of research, ways of thinking and living habits. Gradually, everything became clear and the vital thing I need to do is to take the first step.
I feel super grateful for CHEC members because they taught me how to find the life goal and the ways to achieve it. I finished the internship with two great things CHEC gave to me, and I will move forward with it, step by step.
